We recently received this e-mail…check out their site!

Hi,

My name is Mickey Colon and I am the national consumer awareness coordinator for ConsumerWatch.com. While browsing through a number of consumer product and child safety related websites, I came across your site and was very impressed by the information that you have listed. It is our goal to warn the users of your website about the dangerous products they might come across.

Our site features a comprehensive list of consumer products that are currently available or were previously available worldwide. Injury is the leading cause of death in children and young adults. According to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 2,800 children, ages one to 14 years, that died from an unintentional injury, and they could have been avoided with awareness and product education. At ConsumerWatch.com our goal is to keep the users of your website up-to-date on the latest child safety information.

Sincerely,
Mickey Colon
National Awareness Coordinator

Haiti scams

Tips & News Items No Comments »

We have all been moved by the events in Haiti and many of us are looking for a way to help out. Unfortunately, criminals often take our best intentions and use them against us in scams.

A popular scam regarding Haiti relief efforts is Text Donation–by texting a special word to a particular number, it takes $10 off of your bill and donates it to Haiti relief. The problem: there are hundreds of these codes floating around the internet and only some of them are legitimate.

NOTE: Not all Text Donation is a scam. Unfortunately, there are plenty, though!

How do you know which one to use? Donate only to organizations you know. Don’t respond to some Twitter post or unsolicited e-mail and go directly to a relief organization (like Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org/) and follow the directions there. Right at Red Cross’s home page, they give you the Text Donation directions. Responding to an e-mail from an organization you don’t know could be a complete scam or could significantly reduce your charitable donation with overhead costs (sometimes up to and exceeding 90%).

Make sure when you donate to an organization it goes where it is intended to by doing a little research before texting that donation.

Letter from Senator Herb Kohl regarding Crime Prevention Month

Tips & News Items No Comments »

Home Biography News Issues & Legislation Constituent Services Contact Senator Kohl Unsubscribe
October is Crime Prevention Month and provides a good opportunity to assess federal, state and local efforts to protect our communities.  Striking the right balance includes hard work at preventing truancy and gang activity, cracking down on drug trafficking, providing safe and constructive after-school programs for at-risk kids and ensuring that police officers have the resources they need to do their jobs.  It also means forging a partnership between local law enforcement and the neighborhoods they protect.  I’ve been working with my colleagues in Congress on these and other measures to protect communities in Wisconsin and across our nation.
In the past year we have seen a decrease in the overall crime rate in Wisconsin.  Much of the decrease can be attributed to a 12.3% drop in crime in Milwaukee.  While I am extremely pleased with this achievement, state and local law enforcement need our continued federal commitment in order to sustain this decrease.  Local law enforcement is fighting against the tide of problems that rise in the face of economic hardship and joblessness at the same time their budgets are shrinking.  In addition, we must renew our focus on rural and small city crime prevention where in recent months we have not seen such dramatic reductions, and in some cases we have even seen increases.  One way to continue the important work of prevention is by renewing our commitment to the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program.
The COPS program, initially created as part of the 1994 Crime Bill, has funded more than 100,000 community police officers across the country. Many experts cite this program as an important factor in driving down crime for eight consecutive years in the 1990s. Police Chiefs and Sheriffs across Wisconsin can testify to the program’s success in bolstering their force, providing needed technological upgrades and giving them a presence in troubled schools.
Beginning in 2001, however, cuts to the COPS budget crippled the program; despite bipartisan efforts in Congress to prevent those cuts, the hiring portion of the program was eliminated by 2005. I serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee with oversight of the Department of Justice and have long fought to restore funding for the COPS program to healthy levels.
In order to restore this much needed funding, I introduced the COPS Improvement Act of 2009, authorizing $1.15 billion per year over the next six years for the community policing program in order to put more officers in our neighborhoods. This legislation will re-establish our commitment to local law enforcement by setting up the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services as a distinct office within the Department of Justice. It will re-authorize hiring programs to increase general community policing, local counter-terrorism officers, and school resource officers. Additionally, the bill reauthorizes funds for technology grants, community prosecutors, and makes critical improvements to ensure efficient grant management and to eliminate waste. Not only does the program make our communities safer, but it is a proven method of cost-effective job creation.
The Brookings Institution found “COPS…to be one of the most cost-effective options available for fighting crime.” I couldn’t agree more and that is why I am working to help prevent crime and put more police officers in our neighborhoods and our communities.

Scam School: Con Job disguised as a Magic Trick

Tips & News Items 1 Comment »
YouTube Preview Image

On Scam School (a program by Revision 3) they teach people magic tricks and bar scams. Usually these scams are relatively harmless bar bets, but from time to time they can degenerate.

On the show they’ve covered a few magic tricks, and they’ve covered a few street crimes. This episode they’re going to combine the two and get a magic trick that acts as a smokescreen for an actual crime.

29 Candles on the Cake
McGruff the Crime Dog Celebrates a Special Birthday

Arlington, VA — McGruff the Crime Dog turns 29 years young today. Since his debut in 1980, the beloved icon of the National Crime Prevention Council has helped people “Take A Bite Out Of Crime.”
In his 29 years, McGruff has become a part of America’s fabric. And McGruff isn’t slowing down. This year he has launched a new set of crime prevention messages that talk about such issues as preventing gangs, reducing vacant property crime caused by the foreclosure crisis, and preventing cyberbullying. Naturally, he is continuing to emphasize the need to protect children and youth. The Crime Dog is also gearing up to make hundreds of appearances across the country as part of the second annual Celebrate Safe Communities initiative, which will kick off NCPC’s National Crime Prevention Month in October. Celebrate Safe Communities is a partnership of NCPC and the National Sheriffs’ Association that is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice.
McGruff’s legacy began when his first television commercial said, “You don’t know me … yet. But you will.” Since then, McGruff the Crime Dog has taught millions of people that the police can’t prevent crime alone. Over the years, McGruff has made thousands of appearances at community and school events and on radio and television. Along the way, he has enlisted celebrities including the late Ed McMahon to appear in his public education campaigns. His messages have garnered more than $1.5 billion in donated advertising time. While he still presents tips about how individuals and families can stay safe from crime, he also champions such 21st century issues as protecting children and adults from such emerging crimes as school safety, cyber crimes, and identity theft.
